WBAI Candidate Questionnaire 1.Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board? To help create policies that would bring positive change to WBAI and the Pacifica Network, such as finding ways to improve current equipment, bring in new technology, and have gatherings for staff discussions. 2. How do you envision the local Board working with Pacifica Foundation, WBAI, and the community? WBAI serves the needs of the local signal area, with its many subpopulations, and the Pacifica Foundation is the bridge that links the other stations and the areas that they serve. Each station should retain their autonomy while exchanging ideas and information. They can structure policies together that are beneficial to the entire foundation. The Executive Director and the Pacifica National Board should only review the work of the stations in the broadest sense to see that overall they stay true to the mission. Policies should originate from the bottom up, not be imposed by the National Office, because each station have unique circumstances based on its history and the specific needs of its signal area. 3.How could the station better serve its listeners? By bringing the station to community events for live broadcasts and using surveys to suggest what issues are relevant to listeners. Also, by creating opportunities for listeners to get involved with the station, learn the technology, and utilize it to produce work. The sound quality of our programming should be enhanced by replacing faulty equipment that sends feedback over the airwaves. Our Folio, which informs the public about our station, should be produced more often and sent to grassroots organizations in our listening area. 4.Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience. I would suggest scheduling mini-summits on a regular basis where individuals or organizations from various communities (Latinos, Asians, etc.) are invited to discuss how our programming can be more relevant to them, both in form and content. Also the LSB should send speakers to various organizations\rquote meetings and events to talk about WBAI and what it represents. 5.What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel WBAI should solicit? Grants, concerts by major artists, renting sidebands to other radio stations for a fee. Also, working toward the creation of a Pacifica record label to raise revenue in conjunction with supportive artists. 6.Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board. Some of my skills include languages (tri-lingual), scientific, technical, radio, and public relations. 7.Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation? No. 8. On which Local Station Board committees are you interested in actively serving? If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve? I have attended meetings of several committees over the past two years, and have especially been active on the Finance Committee. I am interested in continuing to serve on that committee.
